HoMedics Total Comfort Ultrasonic Humidifier

OVERALL BEST

One of the most impressive features of the HoMedics humidifier that I found is its clean tank technology. This antimicrobial feature prevents the accumulation of mold and mildew, reduces residue, and keeps your living space smelling clean and fresh.

But the HoMedics does more than just humidify – it also comes with an essential oil tray. So, I could add my favorite essential oils and transform my living room into a haven of soothing and energizing fragrances.

The HoMedics humidifier boasts dual water tanks, each with a capacity of approximately 1.7 gallons. This meant that I could run the humidifier for a staggering 80 hours without needing a refill. Each tank is encased in a sturdy plastic housing and equipped with an automatic shut-off mister to prevent the hard water humidifier from overheating.

The device uses ultrasonic technology to maintain a clean, fresh-smelling tank. It employs specialized antimicrobial technology, unique to HoMedics, to prevent the growth of mold and mildew and the buildup of “white dust” – a problem specifically caused by hard water.

The ultrasonic technology employs high-frequency vibrations that ricochet off a small metal plate, transforming water droplets into a mist. This process is virtually silent, making the HoMedics an ideal addition to kids’ rooms, nurseries, and bedrooms.

Thinking of using it in your living spaces? You’ll be pleased to know that this little unit can cover an area of around 200 square feet!

During the winter months, when the dry heat can be intense, this compact HoMedics device becomes a household hero. It effortlessly heats and humidifies areas throughout the house, facilitating restful sleep and maintaining ideal humidity throughout the night.

The fact that these units don’t use filters or wicks reduces maintenance cost significantly. Their compact size also makes them highly portable, allowing you to move them around the house with minimal effort to humidify any area where you’re spending time.

If you have children who sleep better with a gentle glow, the HoMedics has you covered with a built-in nightlight.

But let’s address the elephant in the room: Is all this tech easy to clean?

In my experience, the answer is a resounding yes. I used a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and lukewarm water to clean the inside of the tank – a task I only had to perform once every two weeks.

What’s more, HoMedics also includes two demineralization cartridges with your purchase to ensure your unit stays in optimal shape. These features collectively make the HoMedics one of the best humidifiers for hard water on the market.

Operating the HoMedics humidifier is a breeze as well. All I had to do was unplug it, fill it with water, add essential oil (if desired), and turn it on.

One thing that particularly impressed me was its whisper-quiet operation. After switching it on, there were no noises or hums to remind me that it was running in the background. Perfect for a peaceful home office!

Now, let’s delve into the pros and cons of this HoMedics Humidifier:

Honeywell Cool Moisture Humidifier

BEST BUDGET

The Honeywell humidifier I tested out offers only a cool-moisture option. It’s a breeze to clean and comes with a special filter designed to trap hard water minerals, putting an end to the annoying white residue.

This Honeywell unit is fitted with a straightforward-to-clean, easy-to-fill, one-gallon water tank. Remarkably, it manages to run for a full 18 hours on a single water refill.

Cleaning the outside casing of the water tank was a snap. It’s detachable, which makes accessing the bottom and inside of the unit for cleaning all the more simple. The tank’s wide opening allows for effortless hand-cleaning.

Notably, both the tank and the tray are dishwasher-safe, so those hard-to-clean corners were no longer an issue. It fits neatly onto the top rack of the dishwasher. Just remember not to go overboard with the detergent.

The Honeywell Cool Moisture Humidifier sports a stylish design. You can choose between white and black, each complemented by a blue tank. It blends seamlessly with my home decor.

Its wide base might make it better suited for floor placement rather than on a shelf, table, or bookcase. I found storage a bit challenging when the humidifier wasn’t in use, especially considering my penchant for small-space living. However, I managed to tuck it away under a rather tall bedside table when it wasn’t needed.

It’s crucial to ensure the humidifier is thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and dried before packing it away for the season. Also, don’t forget to remove the used filter. Taking these steps, I was confident that I had one of the best humidifiers for hard water at home.

Though it’s explicitly designed for small to medium rooms, there’s no risk of over-humidifying the air, even when used in smaller spaces or with hard water. The evaporative technology this unit employs ensures that it only adds as much moisture as the air can absorb.

Unlike most humidifiers that release visible steam through a nozzle, the Honeywell unit utilizes a fan to circulate the air. I found that this method led to a moisture reinfusion improvement of between 40% and 50%.

Comfortably maintaining humidity levels at 40-60% in areas up to 200 square feet, the Honeywell unit made a noticeable difference in dry conditions. Breathing became more comfortable, nasal congestion, dry skin issues, and sleep quality improved. Moreover, it significantly reduced static electricity in the atmosphere.

Once positioned, the settings were intuitive. There was no guesswork in adjusting the mist intensity. I could simply toggle the dial between high, medium, or low settings, making it ideal for hard water usage.

Honeywell asserts that this humidifier is up to 30% quieter than comparable brands and models. Its two-speed setting allowed me to adjust both the moisture output and the sound level to my preference.

Maintenance turned out to be straightforward and budget-friendly. The filter needs replacing at least once a year – overuse will deteriorate the air quality. However, I found the cost of replacing the filter to be quite reasonable, coming in at just around $10.

Pros
  • Quiet operation
  • Refilling the water tank is effortless
  • Stylish design
  • Break-resistant water tank
  • Settings to adjust both moisture output and sound levels
  • Consistently keeps moisture levels between 40% and 60%
  • Wicking filter traps hard water minerals and prevents white dust
  • Ideal for children’s bedrooms – especially in allergy season
  • Filters are easy to find and cost-effective
  • Super affordable, and great features at the price
  • Comfortably humidifies areas up to 200 square feet
Cons
  • Holds less than half the water of our Homedics top pick
  • To refill, you have to unscrew a cap

Levoit – LV600HH

PREMIUM CHOICE

If you’re on the hunt for a humidifier with enough muscle to moisturize a large room and handle hard water with ease, my pick would be the Levoit – LV600HH.

Admittedly, it sits on the pricier side of the spectrum, but the investment is more than justified if you’re dealing with larger spaces.

The Levoit unit houses a water tank that holds a robust 1.5 gallons (6 liters) and offers three mist levels. This translates to an impressive runtime of up to 36 hours before needing a hard water refill.

Interestingly, the Levoit doesn’t rely on filters and manages to humidify spaces up to 400 square feet effortlessly. However, in a head-to-head performance test, it didn’t expel moisture quite as quickly as the HoMedics.

This Levoit model has all the basics covered. It boasts an easy-to-clean tank, and the included humidistat was one of the most efficient ones I’ve ever tested. Given that water with a high mineral content demands a clean unit for optimal performance, this is a clear advantage when you’re after a top humidifier for hard water.

Hitting the auto button on the control panel can push room humidity up to around 68%. However, most people, including myself, find a humidity level of around 45-55% more comfortable. It’s worth noting that the electronic controls used to adjust the humidity are a bit complicated, so make sure to keep the manual close!

Once you’ve got a handle on it, though, the control panel makes it straightforward to set your preferred humidity level, tweak the mist settings, and program the timer.

While the remote buttons are clearly labeled, the ones on the unit itself aren’t quite as obvious. That being said, the settings felt intuitive to me, and the LED screen effectively communicates your chosen settings.

Although the humidistat is top-notch, be aware that my instruments indicated that the unit’s display panel underestimates the humidity by around 8%.

Like the Homics, the Levoit pulls double duty with an essential oil diffuser. It operates like a fan-drawn diffuser, so there’s no need to heat up the oil – a healthier choice in my book.

The option to switch between cool and warm mist and adjust your preferred humidity level was a breeze. The dual-nozzle design is a game changer, making the unit significantly more effective.

When it comes to cleaning, the Levoit LV600HH earns high marks. The water tank’s opening measures around 3 inches, providing ample space for easy scrubbing. Plus, there are no awkward nooks and crannies on the agitator, so there’s nowhere for mold to lurk and grow. This is a major plus, particularly when dealing with hard water.

The instruction manual suggests the occasional deep clean coupled with a white vinegar soak. In my experience, cleaning the unit took around 15 minutes, not counting a half-hour vinegar soak in between.

Let’s now take a quick look at some pros and cons based on my testing experience.

Pros
  • Ultrasonic unit
  • Most accurate humidistat for any set-and-forget operation
  • Heated mist option
  • Excellent choice for hard water
  • It has an essential oil evaporator
  • Generous water tank that is super easy to refill
  • Upper range mist output of 500 milliliters per hour
  • Can easily handle areas as large as 750 square feet (that’s 70 square meters)
  • Comes with a handy remote control
  • Auto function allows you to preset your ideal humidity percentage
  • Auto-off switch for when the water tank is empty
  • Display automatically dims – perfect for the bedroom
Cons
  • Humidity display readings are often inaccurate
